چکیده

Emission of terahertz (THz) electromagnetic (EM) waves from a high critical temperature (Tc) superconductor intrinsic Josephson junction (IJJ) is a new and promising candidate for practical applications of superconducting devices. From the engineering viewpoint, the IJJ THz source is competitive against the present semiconducting THz sources such as quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) and resonance tunnelling diode oscillators because of its broad tunable frequency range and ease of the fabrication process for the device. The emitted EM waves are considered to be coherent because the emission is yielded by synchronisation of thousand stacked IJJs consisting of the mesa device. This synchronisation is peculiar: the resonant frequency of each IJJ is distributed because the cross section of the mesa device is trapezoidal in shape. One of the key features of the synchronisation mechanism is the temperature inhomogeneity of the emitting device. In this topical review, we describe the recent progress in studies of IJJ THz sources with particular emphasis on the relevance of the temperature inhomogeneity to the synchronisation and the emission intensity. This review is of specific interest because the IJJ THz source shows the rich variety of functions due to self-heating which has always been a detrimental feature in the present superconducting devices. Moreover, the thermal managements used for IJJ THz sources will be common with those of other semiconducting devices such as QCLs. In addition, this review is to invite the readers into related research through the detailed descriptions of experimental procedures.

Josephson-vortex-flow terahertz emission in layered high-Tc superconducting single crystals.

We report on the successful terahertz emission (0.6-1 THz) that is continuous and tunable in its frequency and power, by driving Josephson vortices in resonance with the collective standing Josephson plasma modes excited in stacked Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions. Shapiro-step detection was employed to confirm the terahertz-wave emission. Our results provide a strong feasibility o...

Terahertz (1 THz = 10 Hz) radiation bridges the gap between the microwave and optical regimes to offer significant scientific and technological potential in many fields [1]. The possibility of compact, solid-state, and continuous wave (CW) terahertz sources has received extensive attention in the field of semiconductors and lasers, with applications in sensing, imaging, and spectroscopy. Terahertz Wave Emission from Intrinsic Josephson Junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

We have studied the conditions for the THz radiation in many systems with different shapes and dimensions such as rectangles, squares, cylinders and (equilateral and isosceles including right-angled isosceles) triangles and rectangles with non-uniform width (asymmetric rectangles) fabricated from single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, which are known as a typical intrinsic Josephson junction syste...

High-power terahertz electromagnetic wave emission from high-T(c) superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) mesa structures.

In this paper, we report intense electromagnetic wave emissions generated by the rectangular mesa structure of intrinsic Josephson junctions with high-T(c) superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ). The radiated power is an order of magnitude stronger than that of the previously observed power of a few μW. Two emission regions, reversible (R-type) and irreversible (IR-type), with comparable intensities...

Quantum terahertz electrodynamics and macroscopic quantum tunneling in layered superconductors.

We derive a quantum field theory of Josephson plasma waves (JPWs) in layered superconductors, which describes two types of interacting JPW bosonic quanta (one heavy and one lighter). We propose a mechanism of enhancement of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions. Because of the long-range interaction between junctions in layered superconductors, the calcu...
